Concluding paragraphs of a WebOS reality check
Open Source WebOS, then, is really an anti-IBM and -Oracle (Sun) strategy more than anything else. So that’s what Leo Apotheker had in mind! But it can only work if HP makes WebOS truly open to the point of publishing APIs they might otherwise have kept hidden.
Whitman may talk a good game, but I don’t think her troops are ready to be that bold. I think they’ll flinch, perhaps without even telling her, and make WebOS a little less open than it should be. And by doing so they’ll let WebOS fail.
Again.

I’m guessing this means nobody wanted to buy WebOS in a model attractive to HP
The HP TouchPad was such a disaster that the company canceled it 49 days after it launched.
But that was under its previous CEO, Leo Apotheker.
Apparently new CEO Meg Whitman wants to take another shot.
Today, HP spun off the underlying Palm software, WebOS, into an open source project.

An interesting open* milestone; check the article link below for some speculation about potential reasons and ramifications
"Android 3.0, Honeycomb, was designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes and improves on Android favorites such as widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customization," a company spokesman told us. "While we’re excited to offer these new features to Android tablets, we have more work to do before we can deliver them to other device types including phones. Until then, we’ve decided not to release Honeycomb to open source."
Speaking with Bloomberg, Google’s Andy Rubin, who oversees the Android project, made similar noises. "To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made… Continue reading: Steve Jobs vindicated: Google Android is not open • The Register

At the end of 2010, the "open-source" software movement, whose activists tend to be fringe academics and ponytailed computer geeks, found an unusual ally: the Russian government. Vladimir Putin signed a 20-page executive order requiring all public institutions in Russia to replace proprietary software, developed by companies like Microsoft and Adobe, with free open-source alternatives by 2015.

Why was Scott McNealy keynoting a PostgreSQL conference?…
"The purchase price of software is kind of like the first hit of heroin: It’s free," he quipped.
But he no longer sounds sure the open-source route is better, at least from a business point of view.
"That’s why I’m here speaking to you with no salary," he said.
McNealy is not completely unemployed these days. He does consulting for startups and is involved with a nonprofit called Curriki — an amalgam of "curriculum" and "Wikipedia" — that provides free books and other materials for schools.
