Specific Media: Advertising site buys MySpace from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. for $35 million.

One for the record books: $545M less than the purchase price six years ago

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. has finally found a buyer for MySpace, but the $35 million sale price is only a fraction of how much the company had been asking for.

Advertising network operator Specific Media and News Corp. finalized the deal Wednesday, allowing Murdoch’s company to move the once-mighty social networking site off its books before its fiscal quarter ends Thursday.

When the music’s over, turn out the lights

Myspace Music CTO Dmitry Shapiro, who joined the company less than a year ago, has left to found a new start-up, he and Myspace confirmed late Thursday.

Shapiro, who had previously founded and led the legally challenged video site Veoh, said in a post on Facebook that his time at Myspace was “a rewarding, frustrating, eye-opening, and inspiring experience.”

BBC – Newsbeat – MySpace loses millions of users in a few weeks

Plenty of extra space on MySpace

Tech industry analysts comScore say figures show MySpace lost more than 10 million unique users worldwide between January and February.

There were almost 63 million users of MySpace in February 2011, down from more than 73 million.

Year on year the site has lost almost 50 million users, down from close to 110 million in February 2010.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp bought the company for £330 million back in 2005.

If they were to sell today, they might get as little as £50 million for it.
