Justice Dept. Moves to Block Merger Between AT&T and T-Mobile – NYTimes.com

Duopoly != “robust competition”

AT&T said it would fight the lawsuit. “We plan to ask for an expedited hearing so the enormous benefits of this merger can be fully reviewed,” Wayne Watts, an executive vice president and general counsel at AT&T, said in a statement. “The D.O.J. has the burden of proving alleged anticompetitive effects, and we intend to vigorously contest this matter in court.”

Deutsche Telekom, the German parent of T-Mobile USA, said that the Justice Department “failed to acknowledge the robust competition in the U.S. wireless telecommunications industry and the tremendous efficiencies associated with the proposed transaction, which would lead to significant customer, shareholder and public benefits.”

Over the years, Oracle has often grown by acquisitions, but that works only when the valuations of target companies are attractive. Right now they’re too high, Ellison says. President and CFO Safra Catz put it much more simply at the end of the audio clip below: Valuations are, right now, “quite ridiculous.” Meanwhile, as today’s earnings results show, Oracle is growing just fine organically without making any big deals for now, he says.

Still, that didn’t stop Oracle from acquiring privately held Web software player Fatwire just yesterday.

Liberty Media Sees Bright Future for Nook’s Android Platform – WSJ.com

On Tuesday, Barnes & Noble is expected to present a new version of the Nook e-reader in the face of intensifying competition with Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle and Apple Inc.’s iPad tablet. On Monday, rival Kobo Inc., the Toronto-based e-book retailer, introduced a new $129.99 e-reader with a touch screen that’s expected to begin shipping in early June.

Mr. Maffei, who singled out Apple’s success at using its stores to promote its iPads, said Liberty estimates that Barnes & Noble has around 25% of digital book sales.

In Silicon Valley, Buying Companies for Their Engineers – NYTimes.com

Sign of the times

That is what it has come to in bubbly Silicon Valley. Companies like Facebook, Google and Zynga are so hungry for the best talent that they are buying start-ups to get their founders and engineers — and then jettisoning their products.

Some technology blogs call it being “acqhired.” The companies doing the buying say it is a talent acquisition, and it typically comes with a price per head.
