Remember Malcon - the conference for “ethical malcoding”?
For those who don’t remember, there was a bit of a dust-up about it last year when the first one happened. Billed as a “malware authors’ conference“, there was some healthy debate about whether or not it was a good idea.
I happened to notice a bunch of Malcon-related inbound refers (along with a few trackbacks) in the stats this morning, which made me curious about what the cause might be. It turns out that the root cause is that the tickets for the second one — to… Continue reading: Love it or hate it, Malcon tickets are on sale now
So I’ve been thinking more about Malcon (OH NOES you’re probably saying). Anyway, after I posted the thing the other day about Malcon, Kurt Wismer’s counter-argued on his blog that my logic was flawed. That could be.
Out of respect for Kurt’s well-reasoned disagreement, I won’t try to do a TLDR synopsis here (go read it if you want the full background) other than to focus in on one point that he alludes to. I’m still trying to get to the root of how (or if) this thing (Malcon) is different from Blackhat – and why one would be OK in our community and… Continue reading: Introducing the “Malware Conference for Global Evil (and Mass Effect 2)”
Malcon: the malware authorship industry conference. You’ve heard about it here, you’ve heard about it on anti-virus rants, and now you’ve heard about it on PC World.
As you might be able to tell from the title of their article (“Malware Convention — Not a Good Idea”), that PC World… well, they don’t think it’s a good idea.
They quote Grimes who says the following:
No good can come from the conference… There have been similar projects before: virus coding books (plenty of them), dozens of malware ezines, etc., and none add to the good side of the equation…”
Pretty strong words. I’d… Continue reading: PC World, Malcon, and Our Industry’s Flawed Logic
So, I saw today Kurt Wismer’s post over on AV Rants about Malcon. Truth be told, I hadn’t heard about it, so thanks to Kurt for once again illuminating me.
TLDR version for folks not wanting to read his article or the one Kurt quotes: it’s a conference – in Mumbai – targeted to malware authors. Apparently, forwarding the science of how to write “malwares”. Hmmm… I’m not sure where I stand on the idea of having a conference about this. In other words, I’m torn.
On the one hand, at a visceral level, I’m inclined to agree with Kurt when he says… Continue reading: Malcon: the devil? or just a more specialized BlackHat?
