Concluding paragraphs of a WebOS reality check
Open Source WebOS, then, is really an anti-IBM and -Oracle (Sun) strategy more than anything else. So that’s what Leo Apotheker had in mind! But it can only work if HP makes WebOS truly open to the point of publishing APIs they might otherwise have kept hidden.
Whitman may talk a good game, but I don’t think her troops are ready to be that bold. I think they’ll flinch, perhaps without even telling her, and make WebOS a little less open than it should be. And by doing so they’ll let WebOS fail.
Again.

I’m guessing this means nobody wanted to buy WebOS in a model attractive to HP
The HP TouchPad was such a disaster that the company canceled it 49 days after it launched.
But that was under its previous CEO, Leo Apotheker.
Apparently new CEO Meg Whitman wants to take another shot.
Today, HP spun off the underlying Palm software, WebOS, into an open source project.

Still seems pretty expensive, for an HP paperweight
Get your clicking fingers ready! These boys are going to go fast.
Starting Sunday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m. Central time, 16GB and 32GB Touchpads will be available on HP’s ebay store. A $79 accessory bundle will also be available, which includes a case, charging dock and wireless keyboard. Look for them in the laptop section. As you would expect, there are some caveats with this deal with the main disappointment being these are refurbished TouchPads rather than the brand new models sold during the first firesale.

It’s always interesting to me how folks tend to respond to issues in their products. I came across (by way of the always-excellent Mocana DeviceLine blog) an excellent thought piece on HP’s reaction to the whole “printers on fire” thing.
The TLDR version is this: in response to research and subsequent press coverage about a vulnerability in HP printers that allows bad guys to monkey with the firmware, HP sent out a howler calling the claims “sensational and inaccurate”.
Mocana raises the point that HP’s handling of this is not productive. Why? Because HP… Continue reading: HP, Printer Fires, and the House of Nonsense
Part of HP’s new retroactive acquisition rationalization strategy
The way HP sees it, and to be fair it’s not the first company to make this kind of argument, the ratio of data that businesses are creating to what they actually use productively is pretty big. Only 15 percent of that information is neatly organized into the rows and columns of a traditional relational database, HP argues, leaving a lot more information — fully 85 percent — that would be useful if you could only capture it, determine its meaning, and analyze it: Video, audio, email, texts, social media, meeting notes. Add to that the explosion of other real world information gathered from sensors and other measuring devices, and it… Continue reading: HP Wants to Optimize Your Information, Whatever That Means – Arik Hesseldahl – News – AllThingsD
