WebOS could be an important player in the long run as an open-source mobile operating system because Android could become closed with Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility, Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman said Wednesday.
It may take up to four years for the complete impact of webOS to be felt, but HP will remain patient, Whitman said during a speech at the HP Global Partner conference in Las Vegas.

As the only major server vendor who sells boxes running Itanium chips, HP makes a lot of money — billions of dollars, according to a newly unredacted statement in the filing — on service-and-support contracts with its Itanium customers. As one HP executive is quoted on page four of the filing, without Itanium, HP would be “strategically screwed.”

Sign of the times
Apple sold 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs in its first quarter. That’s more than 20 million personal computing devices. HP’s PC sales for the fourth quarter were 14.7 million, according to Gartner. Which means Apple’s iPad sales alone surpassed HP’s PC sales, as Apple Insider first noted.
