Big changes ahead for Cisco
Cisco chief executive John Chambers is slashing jobs and exiting less profitable businesses as competitors such as Juniper Networks Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. take market share in Cisco’s main businesses with lower-priced, simpler products. Sales of Cisco’s switches and routers, which made up more than half of revenue last year, will continue to slip, said Brian Marshall, an analyst at Gleacher & Co.

Tucci, 63, who plans to step down as CEO of the storage provider after next year, has considered at least four candidates, Gelsinger, an EMC president, said in an interview last month. Those are Gelsinger, Goulden, Howard Elias, president of EMC’s services unit, and Paul Maritz, CEO of VMware Inc., majority owned by EMC. Maritz wants to stay at VMware, and Elias isn’t a serious contender, said the people, who asked for anonymity because the search is private.

Cisco has also created its own app store, AppHQ, that contains only apps deemed stable and secure by Cisco. Companies can even create their own app store within AppHQ and limit employees to certain applications, or apps built in house. Cisco announced the details in advance of an event Wednesday at which some initial users and partners were expected to discuss their plans. Medical institutions were prominent on the agenda, including Nottingham University Hospitals in the U.K. and Palomar Pomerado Health, north of San Diego. Doctors and nurses have been widely discussed as potential tablet users–particularly for devices like Cius that have been promoted as having beefed-up security, a concern for institutions that must safeguard confidential patient records.

It predicts that by 2015, one million minutes of video will be watched online every second.
The predictions come from Cisco’s fifth annual forecast of upcoming trends.
Cisco’s Visual Networking Index also estimated that at the same time more than 40% of the world’s projected population will be online, a total of nearly three billion people.
The networking giant forecast that by 2015 internet traffic will reach 966 exabytes a year.
