Steve Jobs on Why Facebook Is Not Part of Apple’s New Ping Music Social Network: “Onerous Terms” | Kara Swisher | BoomTown | AllThingsD

Apple and Facebook not bff

Facebook has noodled for years about creating its own social music offering, including doing a partnership with Lala, which was bought by Apple last year and shuttered in June.

But its efforts have largely gone nowhere.

And Facebook is nowhere on Ping too. Currently, there is no linking, sharing or participation of any kind with Facebook–or Twitter or MySpace either–on Ping, which will work only on the iTunes software on computers, iPhones and iPods.

When I asked Jobs about that, he said Apple had indeed held talks with Facebook about a variety of unspecified partnerships related to Ping, but the… Continue reading: Steve Jobs on Why Facebook Is Not Part of Apple’s New Ping Music Social Network: “Onerous Terms” | Kara Swisher | BoomTown | AllThingsD

"When I was a kid, I used to stare at album covers for hours," he says. "This could be a big, interactive album cover."

None of this will come cheap for Apple. The company is putting the finishing touches on a $1 billion, 500,000-square-foot… Continue reading: Don’t Rule Out Apple Ruling Your Living Room – BusinessWeek

Apple Upgrades iPod Lineup and Apple TV – NYTimes.com

Perhaps the most immediate competitive consequence of yesterday’s Apple news

While Ping may put Apple in competition with Facebook, its impact on the struggling MySpace may be more pronounced, analysts said. MySpace has emphasized music over the last few years.

“This isn’t about reconnecting with your girlfriend from eighth grade,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with the Altimeter Group. “This is about talking to people about music.”

A spokeswoman for MySpace declined to comment.
